Mr. Honey-Jones brings a wealth of experience to the role having been the founding Headmaster of The British School of Beijing and played key roles in the establishment and growth of British schools in Asia and the Middle East. He has a proven record at very quickly establishing high standards of achievement throughout the school whether in academics, music or sport. He was the Founding Chairman of the East Asian Association of British International Schools (EAABIS) and is a qualified UK schools inspector. His passion is developing a school which is community orientated, having a very happy ethos whilst ensuring that high academic standards are maintained. |

Adam comes to KL after helping set up the The British School of Nanjing where he was Head of Primary. Prior to Nanjing, he also played a key role in the development of the British School of Beijing. He began his teaching career as a Classroom and PE Teacher at the Cathedral School of St. Anne’s and St James in Australia before moving to London to teach at the prestigious Our Lady of Victoria Roman Catholic Primary. Adam holds a Bachelor of Education from James Cook University. |

Lauren SchwartzPre-Nursery Teacher Lauren began her EYFS teaching career in Knysna, South Africa were she taught in a private school. Lauren then moved to Moscow in Russia where she worked as an English language private tutor. Lauren has a passion for early years and is really looking forward to working as a pre-nursery teacher. |
Swee PengPre-Nursery Teaching Assistant Swee Peng has previously taught in a childcare center and before joining the British School, she was teaching in a well-known pre-school in Kuala Lumpur. She has an International Diploma in Montessori Early Childhood from Montessori Center International, London and an Introduction to Teaching Young Learners from the British Council, Kuala Lumpur. She is also the school's librarian. |
Katya Honey-JonesNursery Teacher Katya is a dedicated Early Years teacher having taught at British Schools in China and Egypt. She brings with her to KL much experience since being part of the set up team at The British School of Beijing. She has high expectations of the children and embraces technology with her classes from a very young age. Katya has a Diploma of Early Childhood Studies from the UK and is committed to extra curricular activities and the wider side of school life such as Summer Fairs, and other school charitable events. She is very popular with parents. |
Marissa ChinNursery Teaching Assistant Marissa has been teaching in well-known Montessori kindergartens in Kuala Lumpur before joining The British School. She has an International Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy for Early Childhood Education from the UK, and a TESOL Diploma. Marissa is a very dedicated and energetic Early Years teacher, who enjoys arts and crafts activities and story telling with the children. |
Nickie ShawNursery Teacher Nicola has been teaching for 6 years now. 3 years in the UK, working with children age 3 - 11 years old and her fourth year was spent teaching a kindergarden class in an international school in KL and the remainder of the time has been in international schools in KL. Jennifer KirkhamHead of Foundation / Reception Teacher Jennifer has taught in Key Stage One and Early Years Foundation stage both in the United Kingdom and internationally. She graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with an Honours degree in Sociology and she completed her PGCE at Dundee University. Before joining The British School of Kuala Lumpur, Jennifer taught both Nursery and Reception classes during the two years spent working as a class teacher at The British School, Cairo. Laura DawsonReception Teaching Assistant Laura recently qualified from the University of Cumbria with a BA (Hons) degree in Early Years Education. Prior to this she achieved 3A's in her Diploma in Child Care and Education. As a result of these courses she has numerous experiences in nurseries and schools with a variety of age ranges from infants to Year 2. Laura also volunteers with a local church at home and assists with the running of both holiday and weekly clubs for children. |
Gina ParkinsonReception Teacher Gina moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne from Lincolnshire for university and graduated from Northumbria University with a BA (Hons) in Playwork and Social Welfare before completing a PGCE. Gina has since been teaching year 1 and Reception at a local school and was Geography and International Links Co-ordinator before joining BSKL. |
Katharine OakReception Teaching Assistant Katharine has recently graduated from the University of Kent with a BA Honours in History. She is originally from London but is very excited about starting a new life overseas. She has a keen interest in drama and art and intends to do her PGCE in the following year. |
Natalie PowellReception Teacher Natalie completed her teaching degree in Birmingham. She has taught across the whole Primary age range with a lot of her experience being in Key Stage 2. Natalie is currently teaching in Early Years. In her previous schools she has been responsible for ICT, Maths and PE. She has run a variety of after school sports clubs, and also organised themed days and weeks to add creativity to the curriculum. |
Alice GibbonsReception Teaching Assistant Alice graduated with a degree in Contemporary Chinese Studies from the University of Nottingham. She then travelled to China to work in the British School of Guangzhou as a Teaching Assistant. Next year Alice is hoping to apply for her PGCE and qualify as a teacher. Her wish is to fulfil her dream of travelling and teaching in primary classes all over the world. |
Corrie TameHead of Lower Primary / Year 1 Teacher Corrie is a very experienced teacher. She graduated from Ripon and York St. John University with a BA (Hons) in Music with QTS. Prior to joining the team in Kuala Lumpur she taught in an outstanding school in Surrey and before that at an international school in Bangkok. She has teaching experience across all primary key stages and is currently teaching Year 1. |
John GreenYear 1 Teaching Assistant John has recently graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Mathematics and Statistics. He has spent the last two years working in camps in Romania and Germany. John enjoys working with children and embracing new cultures. After his year at BSKL, John will go back to the UK to study his PGCE, to further pursue his career in teaching. |
Peter McSweeney Year 1 Teacher After finishing his PGCE Peter went to live in Beijing where he worked at the British School there. He has worked in both reception and Year One and is a fun, lively teacher. He also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. In 2010, after five years working in Beijing, Peter returned to the UK to study for a master’s degree which he finished last year. He is now teaching Year One here in KL. |

Nia WilliamsYear 2 Teacher Nia comes to The British International School from a highly regarded school in the Forest of Dean in the UK. She graduated from Cardiff University with a BA in English Language and completed a PGCE in Primary Education the following year. Rachel BrennanYear 2 Teacher Rachel graduated from John Moores University in Liverpool with a BA (Hons) in Primary Education with Art and Design (QTS). Currently she is working as a Year 2 class teacher. Rachel has taught in the UK, Japan and China before coming to Malaysia. Previous to joining the British International School, Rachel taught for three years in Year 2 at the British School Guangzhou.

Sam HywoodYear 3 Teaching Assistant Sam has worked as a teaching assistant in the UK, prior to joining BSKL. She has experience of working both in secondary and post-16 education, specialising in supporting learners with learning disabilities. Matthew TadmanYear 3 Teaching Assistant Matthew graduated from the University of Bath with a BSc (Hons) degree in Biology with professional placement, undertaken at the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA. He has worked in both summer schools and has completed the SAS (Students Associates Scheme) to gain classroom experience. |
Jeremy TownendYear 3 Teacher Jeremy graduated from Lancaster University with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Primary Education with QTS. He started his teaching career in Herefordshire in the UK where he taught in what ‘Ofsted’ called an ‘excellent school’. After this he spent many years in a large Primary School in Qatar holding numerous positions of responsibility including head of primary PE, Maths coordinator, Head of Yr 3,Yr 4 and Yr 5. He enjoys most sports and has retired from playing football on several occasions! He has four young children all of whom attend BSKL. |
Rowena AlstonYear 3 Teaching Assistant Rowena studied Social Anthropology at Manchester University. Following her degree Rowena spent a year working as an au pair in Australia and was able to travel around both Australia and New Zealand. Since returning she has worked for Norwich Castle Museum for their education department, getting to work with Reception to Year 6 Primary school children. She also volunteered in a Year 3 class at a school in Norwich, which she has thoroughly enjoyed. |
Colette MulliganYear 4 Teacher Colette graduated from Cardiff University and has a degree in philosophy and sociology. She spent a year in Leeds where she completed her PGCE qualification. She joined us from a school in London where she was PE co-ordinator. Colette has been involved in running numerous after school clubs including football, table tennis, sports leaders and jewellery making and is keenly involved with all aspects of school life at BSKL. She has been responsible for developing our school council whose work she oversees. |
Sheree NormanYear 4 Teaching Assistant Sheree graduated from the University of Hull with a BA (Hons) in English and Media Studies. Before joining BSKL as a teaching assistant, Sheree worked in the educational sector with the local council and church organization to assist in teaching lessons in local schools in the borough of Barking and Dagenham. During her time as a voluntary teaching assistant she has helped in lesson and assembly planning based on citizenship, and also contributed to teaching National Curriculum of KS1 and KS2 Science workshops at the Hull Deep Aquarium. She has a genuine passion for teaching, and early childhood education and development. As well as encouraging children to be academic achievers Sheree is also enthusiastic about helping children to build on and perform in their many talents and gifts. She is eager to boost self-esteem and growth through extra-curricular activities such as sport, music, and art. |
Deborah BrownYear 4 Teacher Deborah has been teaching KS2 children for all of her career. She graduated from Greenwich University with a BSc (Hons) in Computing Science and completed a PGCE in Primary Education through Anglia University. Before joining BSKL, Deborah taught Year 6 and, in her Senior Manager role, led Literacy across the school. She is an enthusiastic teacher with high expectations for her students. |
Allison JohnsonAssistant Teacher Allison was involved in the establishment and development of the Foundation Stage at the British School of Beijing and the British School of Nanjing. Allison has been teaching early years classes in highly regarded British international schools for some time. She has a Diploma in Early Years from the UK. |
David KirkhamHead of Middle School / Maths Teacher David has been teaching Key Stage 2 of the English National curriculum all of his career. He graduated from Liverpool’s Hope University with a Class 1 B.Ed (Hons) Degree and completed his first year of teaching in his native Liverpool. Before joining the British School in Kuala Lumpur David taught Year 5 and was Art & Design coordinator at Doha English Speaking School in Qatar before moving to The British School in Cairo as Deputy Head of Primary. He is a member of the Senior Management Team of The British International School as a Senior Teacher and also Key Stage 2 Co-ordinator. |
Alan SavageEnglish Teacher Having trained to be a teacher, Alan came into the profession relatively late in life, but feels he has found a role that really suits him. Alan firmly believes teaching is never boring and you get to have a lot of fun whilst teaching as well as learning a lot about yourself from the incredible minds and energy of the children. He loves the feeling of building a relationship with his classes and knowing the students look forward to being in his lessons too – as he looks forward to being with them. Alan has a good range of experience in teaching, having taught in the U.K. and Malaysia before. |
Louise BrashierHistory/Geography Teacher Louise is a passionate and creative teacher. Having gained a BA (Hons) in History/Politics and then a PGCE in History she went on to teach Humanities across the age range, up to age eighteen.
She enjoys teaching children of all backgrounds and has taught in Malawi and New Zealand as well as schools in England.
Louise is always keen to become fully involved in the life of the school; previous roles include coordinator of the school newspaper and Head of the Environmental Literacy group. She leaves behind her role at a school in Yorkshire, having held the position of Head of History. |
Ann Azlina Art Teacher Ann holds a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts and Master in Mass Communication from University Technology Mara and had been in the art industry for about 10 years. She participated in many art exhibitions around Malaysia and worked with many production teams for musical shows. Before joining BSKL, she was the Head of Visual Art Department in Sri KDU Smart School for six years and she was with Cempaka International School for two years. Ann loves teaching art to children because she believes art enriches ones culture and allows children to experience the world and different cultures within it. Children think creatively to solve problems in every art lesson. They also share and reflect on their work of art and in this way, children learn something about the world they live in. |
Blandine Pouchard French Teacher A native French, Blandine has a professional degree of School Teacher, a degree in Economics and a degree in French as a Foreign Language (France). She has taught five years in France before moving to Asia where she has spent the last ten years, teaching in French International Schools in Singapore and KL. She likes to share her passion for learning and discovering new cultures and is very enthusiastic about teaching French in the British International school. |
Maria Ribe Spanish Teacher As a native Spanish speaker, Maria is also fluent in Catalan, English and some Bahasa Malaysia. She was trained as interior designer in Barcelona and lived in Bangkok and Madrid during her career years in the Spanish Foreign Service. Now, Kuala Lumpur is her home and she looks forward to share her knowledge in Spanish language with BSKL students. |
Russell BurtonScience / ICT Teacher Russell graduated from Liverpool University with a degree in Psychology and completed his PGCE in science at Liverpool John Moores University. Russell has worked in schools in Liverpool and Nottingham as a secondary Science teacher. He is extremely enthusiastic about bringing the subject to life in the classroom. Russell enjoys all types of sport and is keen to encourage pupils to take part in as many clubs as possible. |
Kim KellyDirector of Music Kim has been a Head of Music at several prestigious schools in the middle east and south east asia. In all of her schools she has set up instrumental programmes which have included large numbers of students providing thrilling ensembles and productions. She is very much looking forward to further developing an exciting music curriculum at The British International School. |
Alex DouglasMusic Teacher Alex began his music studies at the prodigious specialist Purcell School of Music, continuing his education as a scholar at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he attained his BmusHonsLGSM. Since graduating he has worked between alternative, contemporary and classical strands of music, having recorded at Abbey Road Studios and performed at St. Jame's Piccadilly, Draper Hall and Kensington Palace. During the last several years in Kuala Lumpur, he has steadily built a reputation for flute and saxophone teaching, instrumental coaching and developing children's ensembles, working with local ensembles of all styles of music both as a teacher and professional performer. At The British International School he has continued to cultivate, support and build on the natural musical aspirations of young children, working specifically in the instrumental department. |
Charlotte LengMusic Teacher Charlotte graduated from Goldsmiths College, London with a Bachelor of Music (Hons). She began her career as a freelance instrumental and music & movement teacher at various schools in West London. During this time she also performed with her string quartet and in community projects involving music and dramas of different cultures. Charlotte has been in Kuala Lumpur for the past six years teaching music and English to children of all ages, two years of which were spent at a well-known international school. She is thoroughly enjoying teaching a fun and lively music curriculum at The British International School to all children from Pre-nursery up to Year 7. |
Goh Huey NiChinese Teacher and Head of Chinese HueyNi has been teaching Chinese and Chinese history for the past 7 years in Taiwan and Malaysia. She has been working with private schools and UCSI College to develop Chinese language curricula since 2003. HueyNi graduated from the National Taiwan University, majoring in History and Chinese Literature. She has a Masters degree from University Malaya in education management. She has been developing an interesting, fun and challenging Chinese curriculum for the school's students. |

Chloe OngChinese Teacher Chloe has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from University of Northumbria at Newcastle. She also has a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as an International Language from The Hong Kong Institute of Education. She was at the private school and the international school for teaching Chinese Language before joining BSKL. Chloe loves teaching Mandarin simply because Mandarin is a beautiful language. |
May LeeChinese Teacher May graduated from University of Malaya with an honours degree in Chinese Studies. She has a Master degree from Jinan University, Guang Zhou in MTCSOL (Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages). Before joining the British International School in Kuala Lumpur, May taught Chinese Language as a foreign language for two years at Multimedia University in Malaysia. |
Tan Ying Ying Mandarin Teacher Ying Ying graduated from National University of Malaysia with an honours degree in Science. Before joining the British School in Kuala Lumpur, she has experienced teaching in two government Chinese schools in Malaysia. |

Edmund TanPhysical Education Teacher and Head of Physical Education Edmund has a Sport Coaching (Distinction) degree from Deakin University, Australia. He was at the German School Kuala Lumpur for 2 years teaching Physical Education before joining BSKL. He is also the ASA co-ordinator and runs the British International School football academy having previously coached in the Arsenal Soccer School. |
Harrie ThomsonPE / ICT Teacher A keen Sportsman, Harrie completed his teacher training at a sports college in the UK after graduation with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science from Liverpool John Moores University. During his studies and early twenties he coached Football for professional academies and was a personal trainer. Charters Sports College employed him as a full time PE teacher where he taught KS3 - KS5. Harrie left the UK for Kuala Lumpur where he was Sports Co-ordinator at elc International School, during this time he gained Primary teaching experience and developed the schools PE and sports programmes. Harrie's passion is delivering quality, inclusive and enjoyable PE and sport in pursuit of excellence. |
Illangovav Thirumal Assistant PE Teacher Illan has 17 years experience in sports, a diploma from Beijing University of Physical Education China and a degree in Sports Science from Trinity College & University USA. He is an ex-national race walking athlete, state level football player and level 1 National Track and Field Coach. Prior to joining BSKL, Illan has 3years experience teaching secondary students in a private school. He enjoys getting active with the BSKL students. |
Nurul ShakinaBahasa Teacher Nurul holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia and a Graduate Diploma of Education from Edith Cowan University in Australia. She was trained as a teacher in Perth, Australia and subsequently worked as a Bahasa teacher when she returned to Kuala Lumpur after completing her teacher training programme. Prior to that, Nurul taught Bahasa and English to young children at language centres around Kuala Lumpur. |
Norazila Khamis Bahasa Malaysia Azila graduated from University of Malaya with BA (hons) in Malay Studies and is completing a master thesis at the University of Malaya in Malay Language. She was trained as a Malay Language teacher in Beijing Foreign Studies University, China and in Walailak University Nakhorn Sithammarat, Thailand. Prior to that, Azila taught Bahasa to young children at language centres, several private preschools, primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. |
Douglas WilliamsEAL Teacher Douglas joined the team at BSKL as an EAL teacher. He has a CELTA from Waltham Forest College, London, and taught English to refugees and asylum seekers in London before moving to China where he taught all ages in Shanghai. A keen badminton player he is also a journalist and has written and edited for leading publications in the UK, China, Singapore and here in Malaysia. |
